Learn about Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM)

  • On 07/12/18 The FDA release a statement (click here to read release) alerting pet owners and veterinary professionals about reports of canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs eating certain pet foods containing peas, lentils, other legume seeds, or potatoes as main ingredients. These reports are unusual because DCM is occurring in breeds not typically genetically prone to the disease. This previously unknown, but potential link between DCM and dog foods is currently being investigated by FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine and the Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network (a collaboration of government and veterinary diagnostic laboratories). The statement notes taurine deficiency can be associated with DCM, a possible link between diet and the diagnosis is being explored. Taurine has not been recognized as an essential ingredient in dog food.

COUNTRY VET® Naturals Grain-Free dog food is supplemented with taurine.

  • Canine DCM is a condition that results in an enlarged heart. As the heart and its chambers become dilated, it becomes harder for the heart to pump, and heart valves may leak, leading to a buildup of fluids in the chest and abdomen. DCM can lead to congestive heart failure if left untreated. Heart function may improve in cases that are not linked to genetics with appropriate veterinary treatment and dietary modification, if caught early.

  • Taurine is sulfur-containing amino acid important in the metabolism of fats.

  • Yes, our COUNTRY VET® Naturals Grain Free Dog 28-16 formula includes taurine. You can also find it listed in the ingredient panel.

  • If your pet is not displaying any symptoms, you shouldn’t worry. Our grain-free formula is also supplemented with taurine to counteract DCM. As always, we encourage you to monitor your pet for any symptoms (DCM-related symptoms such as a heavy cough, loss of appetite, difficulty breathing, periods of weakness, or fainting).
